Zell an See is just 10 minutes drive from Kaprun, and linked by the free ski-bus, is the slightly larger and livlier, but is an equally charming, lakeside resort.

There are interesting shops, excellent restaurants and bars, well-stocked and reasonable supermarkets (for self-caterers), banks, church services, a cinema, children's playgrounds, galleries, hairdressers, a hospital, chemists, internet providers, post offices and pretty much anything else you might ever need. But apart from the ubiquitous MacDonalds (which you might actually find handy if it happens to be the only solid meal your kids will eat), there is total respect for the preservation of local traditions and culture.

Every Monday (in January and February) an event worth catching is the snowboard acrobatics with fire show at the Kaprun Schaufelberg. This is repeated in Zell (City Xpress) on Wednesdays.
